Star Citizen — Live Facial Capture Integration
Lead of Engineering
The Faceware Live SDK integration with Star Citizen represented one of the most technically demanding partnerships in gaming — connecting Faceware’s real-time facial capture pipeline directly into the CIG engine powering one of the most complex, large-scale MMOs ever attempted.
The integration required deep coordination across game engine constraints, network architecture, and real-time animation blending systems. The result: players could use a Faceware headset to drive their in-game avatar’s facial expressions live, creating a level of personal presence that had never been achieved at this scale in a commercial title.
This work also drove the development of a dedicated low-light capture device — a hardware product designed to deliver 60 FPS facial data in near-dark environments, specifically to meet the demands of gamers who typically play in dim rooms. The device doubled as a standard webcam while providing the precision capture Faceware’s pipeline required.
